Ferenc Tobak has long been interested in finding and documenting
Hungarian Csángó bagpipers in Moldavia, one of the eastern provinces
of Romania. In 1998 he was able to begin this project in earnest,
and traveled to Moldavia to search for traditional Hungarian pipers
and their communities. He visited Romania several times over the
years,
documenting with photography, and
audio and video recordings. The advanced age of many of the
musicians, particularly the pipers, gave an urgency to the project for
Ferenc to
preserve this once-vibrant tradition.
